Tyrants, Despots, and Authoritarians Part 1: Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh and Enkidu: The First Buddy Film

The epic of Gilgamesh is the story of a cruel tyrant who abused the citizens of the ancient city of Uruk in what is now Iraq. The gods tried to check his despotic ways by creating an animal-man named Enkidu to challenge Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh won the battle and the two men became best friends. Then the two buddies went on a road trip and ended up destroying a sacred forest just for the hell of it. That pissed of the gods so they killed Enkidu. Gilgamesh was so sad he went looking for immortality but couldn't figure it out. Eventually Gilgamesh learned humility and came to understand that civilization was his most important and lasting achievement. Here's to happy endings.

March is a good month for reflecting on tyranny and resistance.
