This was my wife's idea.

I think she's trying to tell me something.

Magical Natural Phenomena

When the female cottonwood trees around here start casting off their cottony seed, it's like a snow shower in summer. Its magical to be alive.

Another ArrghPtoo! Weather Report.

We've gotten so much rain in the last couple of weeks that even my 9 year-old daughter thinks it's "creepy." Then again, "creepy" and "random" seem to be her two favorite words of late and she's been sprinkling them with rather a heavy hand throughout our recent conversations.

But to a desert bred Southern California boy like me, all this wild green growth the rains are bringing to the landscape around here seems a bit creepy to me too.

On the plus side, there's absolutely no talk of water rationing. Now if we can just get it to rain gasoline we'd be in business. That would be so random!!

Super Hero Fail. #1 in a series.

Sometimes something like this just happens and even I'm not sure what to make of it. I reach in with a big scoop and see what comes up. I report. You decide.

I'm just glad to be here and I'm glad you're here too. Happy Sunday.

Love,
ArrghPtoo!

Have A Nice Apocalypse! :)

"Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here 2 tell u
There's something else
The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness
U can always see the sun, day or night

So when u call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
U know the one - Dr Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

'Cuz in this life
Things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life
You're on your own

And if de-elevator tries 2 bring u down
Go crazy - punch a higher floor"

Protection

The other day I saw a crow attacking a Red-tailed Hawk in the blue sky right above my house and my heart skipped a beat at the beauty and incongruity of those two birds together in the same air space.

Even though I like crows a lot and I always welcome them when they visit my trees and lawn, I felt a surge of indignity at the injustice of this remarkable hawk being harassed and harangued.

Then I realized that the crow was no doubt protecting it's young chicks nesting in the nearby trees from this very effective predator and my sympathies quickly switched sides.

An instant later I thought of the hawk's hatchlings and how they themselves were probably hungrily waiting for a meal of delicious crow.

Finally, I just let the two birds and the bright blue sky behind them burn into my retinas to be remembered later as a lesson about how difficult it is to pick sides in that kind of conflict.

Today is all about happiness.

There's an interesting article in the Science Times yesterday about the positive psychology movement and the researcher who now believes that "well-being" or "flourishing" are useful terms for describing human happiness.

He goes on to say that "...well-being is a combination of feeling good as well as actually having meaning, good relationships and accomplishments."

Check out my friend Gretchen Rubin's blog about the subject of happiness and how to have more of it at The Happiness Project. I respect how she approaches the subject with a lot of authentic research and personal commitment, and how she helps people find their own definitions and pathways to happiness.

I'm still working on rolling out this blog and getting it into the shape of my liking. I have to say that it has brought me a lot of happiness as defined above. Thank you all for visiting ArrghPtoo!

Egotism? Egoism? Let's call the whole thing off!

Yesterday my 9-year old daughter, Lily, out of nowhere yelled out, "we're running out of an aesthetic!" At least I thought that's what she said. What she really meant was, "we're running out of anesthetic!" I'm still not completely sure why she said that (I think it was her idea of a joke having to do with my wife cutting a bag open with some scissors) but what I misheard sent me down the path that led to today's iPhone drawing. That and the fact that someone I've known my entire life recently called me an egotist as if that were the most obvious thing in the world.

Egotism: an excessive or exaggerated sense of self-importance.

Egoism: the doctrine that holds that individuals ought to do what is in their self-interest.

Art: the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Aesthetic: a philosophical theory as to what is beautiful.

Anesthetic: a substance that induces insensitivity to pain.

Feat of Faith

Hope fires: the burning intensity of desire for something and the often times delusional confidence in the possibility of its fulfillment.

Thanks to my very dear friend B Modern for her ongoing encouragement and inspiration.

Lucky Stiff, Upper Lip

Today I wake up and I just don't know what to say or do.
Even so I'm still able to make marks on paper or screen
that convey somehow to you all what I'm going through.
And I guess you can say I feel lucky.

Back From Blogger Purgatory

With Blogger down the last couple of days I was feeling a bit lonely... in a purely virtual way. It did at times feel like it was just me and my iPhone.

Glad to be back up and bringing the Daily iPhone Drawings again. Check the archive for the missing posts from Thursday and Friday. I think you'll like them.

Okay, Let's Go.

Friday the 13th fell on a Friday this month! It's the 2nd day that my blog ArrghPtoo! is down. What's going on with Blogger? Does it have something to do with the threatened $500m fine against Google? In any case, I just continue to roll along...

Severe Clear

‎"The weather on the morning of Sunday, May 1st, was a springtime glory: crisp, sunny, infinite blue skies — the sort of conditions that pilots call 'severe clear.'"

This is the opening paragraph of the wonderfully thoughtful piece in this week's New Yorker by David Remnick about the day Osama Bin Laden was killed.

Today was another incredibly clear blue day here in New York and I thought yet again about that horrifying September morning almost 10 years ago — but this time with a difference.

Weather proves to be popular topic on ArrghPtoo! blog.

The last couple of days the pollen has been coming down like snow flakes. My head feels like the used towel hamper at a public swimming pool. Weird weather abounds.

Another in a series about my head.

Some days are just busier than others.

And some days my head is a bouncy castle with one, lone kid ricocheting inside.

An Incipient Disquietude

Sometimes my insomnia is caused by the caffeine. And sometimes it's pure existential angst. And sometimes, like last night, I've just had too much to dream. But today I feel so much better. It must've been the Electric Prunes. Here's my daily iPhone drawing (made on my iPad this time). Have a nice Monday.

Mama's Boy

My wife convinced me that my drawing for today crossed the line from good taste into bad art. And, by law, I have to give her everything she wants today. So, I'm replacing my drawing with a photo of my wonderful mom who inspires me every day. Happy Mother's Day!

Coffee = Yelling?

‎"In general, more than 1.5 grams of caffeine a day can cause the typical symptoms of caffeinism: anxiety, insomnia, IRRITABILITY and palpitations." - Richard A. Friedman, M.D. in the NY Times

That's about 6 cups of coffee or 2 venti Starbucks. In my family we say that someone who is complaining, or being irritable, or just being a pain in the butt is "yelling their head off." So if I'm ever yelling my head off, you'll probably know why.

I have my first yoga lesson later this morning. Trying to work with what I've got.

The Tiny League of Sassy Girls

Now for something completely different: amid all the heated discussion about OBL yesterday, this daily drawing came out of a conversation I had with my daughter about some of the very important social challenges that 9 year-old girls face everyday.

A Very "Discussive" Day

I'm sure I'll open myself up to all sorts of criticism for writing this but I think it sadly barbaric to celebrate the violent death of anybody, even a horrible enemy.
What a strange May Day this turned out to be
